What better way to start the new year than by mowing down zombies left, right and center? Fortunately, if that’s what you’re looking for, Saber Interactive has the update for you.
World War Z is seeing a free update that will bring tons of new content to the zombie smash game. But the real game changer is the number of zombies you will encounter.
The deadly Horde XL will be added to the game on January 24, 2023, as part of a free upgrade, along with new weapons and a revamped progression system. You will need a PS5 or Xbox Series X | S or PC to play with the new 1,000-strong zombie hordes, but many more deadly weapons and a progression system are coming to PS4 and Xbox One, too. This will come in handy if you come across a new enemy, mutants, that have now been added to Horde Mode Z.

Big bites
You might think this sounds cool and I’m all for the chaotic zombie killing battles, but waves of 1000 might be too much for the less synchronized teams. While World War Z is known for its raging zombies, if you’re relying on strangers with online co-op to help you survive the onslaught, you may be left behind.
If you rely on strangers with online co-op to help you survive the onslaught, you may be left behind
I remember in Valve’s co-op shooter Left 4 Dead 2 how my friends and I learned the need to actually team up in a co-op shooter. The four of us were fighting the ground through a skyscraper, racing toward a rooftop helipad. The first of our team went down the stairs. In a panic we left them behind.
We reached a floor of office cubicles and it was all strewn about, frantically scanning the doors for medical supplies or an exit to the helipad. In hindsight, and I’m no expert, we probably should have been more coordinated than this.
Through my headphones, I could hear one of my friends having an up close personal conversation with two particularly unpleasant office workers. I didn’t help, I didn’t even know where he was. No, I was looking for something more substantial, medkits.
I gingerly opened a door only to see my entire life flash before my eyes as a heavy, muscular tank slammed through the doorway straight into my face. Before I knew it, he took a swing at me, and I shot out the window. As I fell dead and stared at my screen, I wondered what it would be like to have a team that understands coordination.
But if one zombie can completely screw us up, what will 1,000 do?
The update hasn’t been released yet, and one World War Z player Share how much work an uncoordinated team has done for them. During the mission, ThePositivePandemic was forced to take about 2,000 kills as many players kept going in and out of the game. “It was probably the hardest pregnancy I’ve ever had,” said ThePositivePandemic. “The game kept trying until the end to get us down, but (I) managed to beat it.”
While this new update is exciting, it will be interesting to see if random online lobbies will fight back against these collective hordes. I, for one, might have to do a few drills with the rest of my squad before heading to the front lines for this update.
