The creator of Vikings Valhalla has suggested that Netflix’s hit historical drama could continue in some form beyond its third season.
Speaking exclusively to TechRadar ahead of the release of Vikings Valhalla season 2, showrunner Jeb Stuart expressed hope that Netflix will renew the show for a fourth season or potentially highlight some spin-offs.
Currently, Vikings Valhalla is set to end after its third season, with Netflix only renewing it for two more installments (in March 2022) after the first season’s release. Additionally, the Valhalla story is confirmed to have concluded with the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, which marked the end of the Viking Age.
Already filming, season 3 of Vikings Valhalla is sure to conclude one of the best staple stories for Netflix shows by bringing the Battle of Stamford Bridge to life on the small screen. If the third entry in the series does bring down the curtain on the Viking Age, viewers may be wondering how it can continue with no story to tell.
However, Stewart is optimistic about the future of Valhalla after the third season. The Fugitive and Die Hard writer wouldn’t comment on whether season 3 will actually end with the Battle of Stamford Bridge, or if Netflix has quietly informed him that it’s renewing Vikings Valhalla for a fourth season. However, Stuart is very open to returning for more installments, stating his desire to continue the journeys of Leif Erikson, Harald Sigurdsson and Freydís Eiríksdóttir in some way.
“We have completed [filming on] Season 3,” Stewart confirmed when TechRadar requested an update on its development. And we will work on it [post-production] for several more months.
“It’s been a great ride for us, but we feel like there’s more to the Valhalla story to tell. We hope our good friends at Netflix think so too because we have so many stories about all these characters out there.”
Can we expect to see a fourth Vikings Valhalla season, then? Much depends on how well the second and third seasons will do. Vikings Valhalla season 1 had more than 266 million hours watched between February and April 2022, so follow-up seasons will need to match or exceed that number for Netflix to consider renewing it for another outing.
If Vikings Valhalla season 3 is the series finale for the historical drama, how does its second season lead up to events in the show’s potential final outing? Stewart isn’t going to give away much, but he has hinted tantalizingly at how Season 2 will create its sequel.
“Season two plays into season three in a very big way,” he quipped. “At the end of this season, I think there’s some great closure. At the same time, a big door opens that leads us into season three, which I’m really excited about.”
Fortunately, we don’t have to wait to see how Vikings Valhalla season 2 ends. The latest installment of the hit Netflix show is available for full streaming on Netflix right now – Valhalla Season 2 hits the world’s best streaming service on Thursday, January 12th.
