Sony has just announced the latest additions to its PlayStation Plus game slate; It will be available on January 17, 2023.
Nine new games join the catalog of PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium games, including the blockbuster Devil May Cry 5, zombie slaying co-op shooter Back 4 Blood, and the vibrant single-player explorer Omno.
Those on PlayStation Premium will be treated to some great PS1 classics, too. These include Star Wars Demolition, where you can choose over a dozen iconic vehicles and battle it out in different arenas, Siphon Filter 3, and Hot Shots Golf 2.
The best of the bunch
While some big hitters join the list for PlayStation Plus, like Life is Strange and Dragon Ball FighterZ, the standout for me is Devil May Cry 5.
When I fell into the shoes of demon hunter Dante and started carving monsters in Devil May Cry 5, the world felt very familiar despite not having played the previous games in the series. The infernal creatures and the foreboding atmosphere were like old friends. Everything clicked when I realized the Devil May Cry franchise was the rejected offspring of one of my all-time favorite horror games.
Devil May Cry came to life thanks to Rejected bid for Resident Evil 4 In 1999. Initially developed for the PS2, producer Shinji Mikami asked director Hideki Kamiya to revamp the iconic series and try to take Resident Evil in a different direction.
Under the name “Little Devil Team”, early research began, including a trip to Spain to examine various castles as the basis for the game’s environment. Unfortunately, developer studio Capcom eventually decided that this idea would be too far out of the way for the series, so it was abandoned.
Thankfully, the premise was tweaked into the first Devil May Cry rather than scrapping the entire concept. I think getting Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry was probably one of the best two-for-one deals I’ve ever seen. But don’t take my word for it; Head over to PlayStation Plus and find out for yourself with Devil May Cry 5.

Devil May Cry 5 is one of my favorite games, not only because of the incredibly chaotic battles or the great voice acting, but because it was my first window into the series.
While I’ve always loved Resident Evil, I’ve never found this demon hunter’s paradise. That was until the pandemic hit in early 2020. Left isolated and with little to do, I started searching online for something I could sink my teeth into. Fortunately, Devil May Cry 5 was on sale on Steam.
Having this series to enjoy and explore through the first few months of the pandemic helped me tremendously, and so I will always think fondly of Dante and his demon-hunting crew.
I also have to admit I was pleasantly surprised to hear the great voice acting of Nero’s Johnny Yong Bosch, who also stars in the English Dub of Bleach as protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki. As someone who grew up with this anime series, it was definitely a welcome surprise to hear a familiar voice amidst all the brutal carnage and demons.
