At least one of the groups organizing anti-government truckers’ protests in Canada has canceled the event, citing “multiple security breaches”.
The somewhat confusingly-named “Canadian Unity for Freedom Caravan – Freedom Caravan” is a reunion of a similar one-year protest that took place in 2022 and saw truck drivers express their discontent with mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations in the country.
Subsequently, the protests were criminalized and the organizers threatened to bring criminal charges against them.
10-7 until further notice
A year later, a second protest was planned, for 17-20 February – but this has now been cancelled.
“As a result of these security breaches beyond our control, I cannot in good conscience guarantee public safety as promised, nor can I guarantee the other national partners of Team Canada’s Unit Freedom Caravan who may be considered caravan organizers, protection from indictment under Ontario’s Bill 100.” James Bauder, one of the group’s organizers, wrote in a Facebook post.
The post has since been removed from the platform.
“As a result, the Canadian Unity Convoy for Freedom – the Freedom Caravan will officially remain 10-7 until further notice,” he added. For those unaware, 10-7 is a radio code used by the Citizen Band (CB) and the Canadian Police, to describe signing in or out of commission.
Bauder did not go into detail about the nature of these security breaches, so we don’t know if there were any viruses involved (Opens in a new tab) or malware. when i arrived before logBauder was not available for further comment. The post states that Bauder was arrested in February 2020 during anti-vaccination protests that turned violent in Ottawa.
But it doesn’t seem like other people are keen to quit smoking just yet.
“There are many people and groups involved. The 2023 Global Unity Caravan has not been cancelled,” Ron Clark, an attendee at the Freedom Caravan, told CBC by email. Attendee Tyson Billings confirmed this, saying “I don’t know if something is going to go to Ottawa or not, but the main caravan – the Global Unity Caravan – is about unity and it’s about bringing people together.”
