Nespresso Vertuo Next vs Nespresso VertuoPlus: Price
Well, let’s start with the cost: Nespresso’s single-serve coffee makers are more affordable than traditional espresso machines, as used by coffee shop baristas, because they don’t have a portafilter, so they’re much less messy and much easier. Keep clean. The Vertuo Next will set you back $169 / £149 / AU$269.
Now, there are two designs of the Nespresso VertuoPlus, which is slightly larger than the Vertuo Next. In the US and Australia, the two models are made by Breville and De’Longhi, while in the UK, they are made by Krups and Magimix. Whichever build you choose, the Nespresso VertuoPlus is $159 / £179 / AU$299.
Nespresso says there are no differences between the two models, aside from a slightly different footprint.
If you’ve ever been confused as to why there are two designs – you’re in the right place. We contacted Nespresso and asked them to explain why there are design differences between the VertuoPlus versions, and why they are made by different brands around the world but they have not yet responded.
But as for what you care about – the functionality and price are identical, so you can buy VertuoPlus without worrying about which model to get.
(Just to confuse things, there’s also a VertuoPlus Deluxe / VertuoPlus Limited Edition, which offers a metal cup holder, metallic accents and a larger water tank at $189 / £199 / AU$329 – but we’re focusing on the Standard Edition for this comparison.)
What about the competition? Well, Nespresso coffee makers are the only single-serve coffee makers around the world, so it’s hard to make a true comparison.
Keurig offers a range of similarly priced machines in the US – for example, the Keurig K-Supreme coffee maker can brew four different sizes of hot brew from K-Cup pods and costs $159.99 (about £120 / AU$220) but isn’t Available in the UK or Australia.
Nespresso Vertuo Next vs Nespresso Vertuo Plus: Design
These two Nespresso coffee machines definitely look different. The Nespresso Vertuo Next is the smaller of the two machines, measuring 5.5 x 16.8 x 12.4 in / 14.2 x 42.9 x 31.4 cm.
Its slim design, only slightly wider than a coffee cup, makes it ideal even if you’re tight on your worktop. It comes with a 37 ounce / 1 liter water tank, which can be removed for easy filling.
As mentioned earlier, the Nespresso VertuoPlus comes in two versions, though both are larger than the Vertuo Next, at 3 inches wide and have a 40-ounce/1.1-liter water tank. keeping up? Good, because we’re about to launch the Vertuo Plus Deluxe, known as the VertuoPlus Limited Edition in the UK. Again, there are two designs and although they look similar to their standard counterparts, they have larger 60oz / 1.8L water tanks, so you won’t need to refill the coffee maker as frequently, along with the stylish metallic accents we’ve come to love. It has already been mentioned.
Unsurprisingly, all Vertuo machines take Nespresso Vertuo capsules. They are wider and flatter than the popular “Original” capsules, but essentially have a barcode printed on the side, which has instructions on how to adjust brewing parameters, such as water flow, volume, temperature, infusion time, and rotation of the capsule, printed on the side. The machine reads this barcode and then tracks the parameters to ensure consistent coffee every time, unlike the original range of Nespresso machines.
Nespresso Vertuo Next vs Nespresso VertuoPlus: Features Under Test
When it comes to brewing coffee, the two different models are evenly matched. In testing, the couple created a rich, intense espresso with thick crema, which was fixed after a spoonful of sugar was sprinkled on top.
The Vertuo Next can brew espresso, double espresso, and two large coffee sizes (5oz/150ml and 8oz/235ml) plus an 18oz/530ml carafe for those who need a longer shot of caffeine.
However, the VertuoPlus can only brew single-serve coffees, which means it can brew espresso and larger coffee sizes, but there’s no way to brew a jug of more expensive machines.
However, the Vertuo Next heats up a bit slower, taking 30 seconds to get up to temperature instead of the Plus’s 20 seconds, but in reality, that’s not a big deal.
The VertuoPlus also outperforms the Vertuo Next with its movable water tank, which can be placed on the back of the device or to the left or right. This means that it can easily fit into any kitchen setup, even if you have narrow countertops, or if you are tight on space. Unfortunately, the placement of the Vertuo Next’s water tank is fixed. The VertoPlus also has a slightly larger water tank, which doesn’t need to be refilled as frequently, although at only 30z/100ml it will only make three espressos before it needs to be replenished with water.
However, the next one has slightly better environmental credentials. Auto Power Off starts after two minutes instead of the nine minutes it took VertuoPlus to automatically shut down, which is a handy way to save energy.
The machine is also made from 54% recycled materials. While the Vertuo Plus is also made with some recycled materials, Nespresso has refused to disclose the exact percentage, so we’re guessing it’s less than half.
Finally, the Nespresso Vertuo Next also has Bluetooth and can connect to an app on your phone, which will alert you when stock of Vertuo capsules is running low, as well as update the software when necessary.
Nespresso Vertuo Next vs Nespresso Vertuo Plus: The Verdict
When it comes to choosing the right Nespresso Vertuo machine for you, if you are looking for a compact coffee maker that can brew a range of different sizes of coffee, the Vertuo Next is the best choice. It’s also a good choice if you want a design that can save energy and is the most affordable Vertuo compatible device on the market.
However, for those who want the flexibility of being able to reposition the tank to fit even the most bijoux of kitchens, the VertuoPlus is a better option. It’s also the best model for those who want a fast-heating coffee maker and, thanks to the large water tank, a machine that doesn’t need to be refilled frequently.
While we don’t want to tell you which is best for your needs, the Vertuo Next packs a lot of extra features for the price, making it our pick.
