In most years, there is not much competition in the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip line, but in 2022 all that changes, as the Motorola Razr 2022 becomes a serious competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.
This wasn’t Motorola’s first foldable clamshell, but it was the company’s first really cool vehicle, and it left us with high hopes for the Motorola Razr 2023.
We’ve already heard a bit about this upcoming phone too, so below you’ll find all the leaks and rumors we’ve heard so far, and we’ll add them to this article as soon as we hear more.
Within that, you’ll also find a list of things we want from the Motorola Razr 2023, to make it an even better foldable phone than the Razr 2022.
cut to the chase
- What is this? Motorola’s next foldable phone
- When is the exit? Probably around August 2023
- How much will it cost? Probably around £949.99 / AU$1,599 (around $1,155 USD)
Motorola Razr 2023: release date and price
We will likely have to wait a while to get our hands on the Motorola Razr 2023, as the Razr 2022 only landed in August 2022, so August 2023 is the most likely month for the next model to be released.
Motorola hasn’t stopped August every year, but these phones are always announced at least at the end of the year, so if anything, August is probably the earliest we’ll see it.
There’s also the question of which countries it will actually be available too, because while the 2022 model is available in the UK and Australia, you can’t currently buy it in the US — even though earlier models were launched there.
There aren’t any pricing rumors yet, but the Motorola Razr 2022 starts at £949.99 / AU$1,599 (around $1,155), so a similar price for the next model is entirely possible.
The Razr 2022 represents the best balance of price and performance that Motorola’s foldable series has achieved to date, and finally makes it cost-competitive against the equivalent Galaxy Flip from Samsung. It would be nice if prices continued to drop, of course, but that seems like a step too far.
Motorola Razr 2023: news and leaks
There aren’t many Motorola Razr 2023 leaks yet, but we’ve heard a couple of things, including one claim that comes from Evan Blass (Opens in a new tab) — a well-known leaker — tweeted that there will be two new Razr models in 2023. They appear to be codenamed Juno and Venus, but no additional details were provided.
Of these, Juno is likely to be the successor to the Razr 2022, due to an earlier leak on 91Mobiles (Opens in a new tab) He said that the Motorola Razr 2022 successor was codenamed Juno and would again have a 144Hz display.
So what about Venus? There is no news about that. The above source also mentioned another phone codenamed Felix, which appears to be the company’s first foldable phone, but it’s likely to go further than that.
Venus might then be a phone in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 mold, but that’s just speculation for now.
What we want to see
There are a number of things we’d like to see Motorola work on with its next Razr model, with the following five being at the top of our list.
1. Better cameras
Motorola Razr 2022 has much better cameras than previous models, but there is still room for improvement in Razr 2023.
We want to see improvements to post-processing, a better ultra-wide camera — as the Razr 2022 disappoints — and even the addition of a perfectly telephoto lens; Although that last part might be too much to hope for.
2. Long-term update support
Motorola promises just two years of Android version updates and three years of security patches with the Razr 2022, which isn’t enough, especially for such an expensive phone, and even more so since Samsung and OnePlus offer four years of Android updates and five years of security patches with their phones. specific.
So we want to see Motorola commit to longer software support with the Razr 2023, otherwise it can be hard to recommend.
3. Water resistance
It seems like it would be difficult to make a foldable phone waterproof, but somehow Samsung has managed with modern phones, so we’d love to see Motorola do the same with the next Razr.
Technically, you get some of that on the Razr 2022, but its IP52 rating is much lower than what Samsung offers.
Decent water resistance is a standard feature on premium phones, and for good reason — since the last thing you want is a little rain turning your purchase into an expensive paperweight.
4. Wireless charging
While the Motorola Razr 2022 has reasonable battery life and charges very quickly, it only supports wired charging, which is a shame for such an expensive phone, especially since its main competitor — the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 — offers wireless charging. So we would like to introduce Motorola Razr 2023 as well.
5. Smoother performance
There’s no shortage of power on the Motorola Razr 2022, but in our review we found that actual performance wasn’t always great, with occasional noticeable jumps and stutters.
Given the hardware and the price, that’s not really acceptable, so we’d like to see the Razr 2023 optimized to deliver smooth performance, as that will help it rank among the best foldable phones.
