Through the medium of a Wes Anderson-esque stop-motion trailer, publisher Game Science has announced the release window for its upcoming RPG Black Myth: Wukong. A game that is somewhat similar to Elden Ring if set in Chinese mythology.
We can expect Black Myth: Wukong to release in the middle of 2024. It might sound like a time to go for those still wearing their 2022 hats, but in reality, it’s only 18 months away. This isn’t all that long, unless you’re a rabbit.
This is Spin Game Science kicking things off with Black Myth: Wukong Release Trailer. The animated video shows a rabbit spending its entire life waiting for the game. See, it’s kind of a challenge to interpret, and you just have to watch it to see what I’m about.
While it’s clear from the trailer that Black Myth: Wukong is coming to PC, Game Science has yet to confirm what consoles the title will be coming to. We hope to see Black Myth on PS5 or Xbox Series X | S is where the game will come to “other major consoles,” according to the Game Science website (Opens in a new tab).
The bigger picture
Black Myth: Wukong is set in a fantasy world inspired by the East, where you will take on the role of the legendary character Wukong as you travel around the desolate and unforgiving landscape, defeating imaginary enemies. Inspired by the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West, Wukong will meet many strange and legendary characters along his way.
There’s a giant fat spider somewhere out there, and honestly, it actually scares me
While the new trailer only contains a snippet of the gameplay, in 2020 Game Science announced Black Myth with 13 minutes of game footage (Opens in a new tab). The new clip resembles the Elden Ring in its weary, gray landscape; We can see Wukong fighting what appears to be a huge tiger wielding a long and intimidating sword. In this short fight, it seems like the best way to take out this tiger is to knock it down and then get it out of there before it lands. In this sense, the attacks also mimic Elden Ring’s hit-and-run fighting style.
Inspired by Chinese legend and recreating the world of Journey to the West, a fantasy epic in the vein of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, we can expect a huge landscape full of strange monsters. Exploring these stories in an RPG will allow us to get up close and personal with those monsters, for good and for bad: There’s a huge, fat spider somewhere out there that, honestly, actually scares me.
long time come
While for me, 2024 does not seem like a long time to wait, it may be because I just learned about the Black Legend. The project has been in development since 2011; It took Game Science 12 years of hard work to get this far.
Game Science talks about the difficulties of completing such a massive quest on the Black Myth: Wukong information page (Opens in a new tab); He wonders if enough work has been done or even if it was all worth it. “On countless nights of working overtime, exhaustingly, we’ve asked ourselves half-jokingly – How important is that?” Game Science says.
Fortunately, Game Science believes in the long-awaited RPG and is pushing full steam ahead to reach its target release window in 2024. In the meantime, we can sit and wait for more news about Wukong and where it will go next.
