From never-before-seen maps to different models, the latest Team Fortress 2 leak has given fans a lot to think about.
the largest valve he has seen to date; The 61GB leak includes several maps, models, PSDs (Photoshop Source Design) and VMFs (Valve Map Format) for Team Fortress 2. The latter is a format that stores raw map data and is used to save production phase maps and prefabs.
While the exact source of the leak is currently uncertain, Richter Overtime has shared some of its contents on Twitter Twitter (Opens in a new tab)including what appear to be images of these unreleased maps and models.
what’s new?
Browsing through all of the unreleased content, fans have found some interesting concepts. It looks like we could have had a captured Dustbowl map that would have integrated all three stages of the Dustbowl and even some of Goldrush. If sand isn’t your thing, how about a level four tower with a teleporter attached to the top?
The possibilities seem really endless. Fans were able to find a Bounty Mode test map and even in-developer templates for the original powerhouse map. All this after a day of searching and digging, so there will definitely be more to find.
rule of three
While I gave up any chance of a third installment in the Team Fortress series, there are still some who remain hopeful. With all these unused maps and data, why not Valve pick the series back up?
Unfortunately, despite all this content, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting a new Team Fortress anytime soon. It’s been nearly 16 years since Team Fortress 2 was released, and Valve has never officially announced plans to develop another entry in the series. This isn’t much of a surprise, since the developer has, historically, not dealt with trilogies. Portal was suspended after two games, and Half-Life fans have been waiting over a decade for Half-Life 3. So the possibility of TF3 seems extremely unlikely at this point.
All we can hope for now is that this content isn’t completely dead and buried. Even if a developer isn’t keen on creating a new series entry, all of these unreleased maps and modes could make for a huge, welcome update. But I don’t hold my breath.
