The must-watch 2022 show breathed new life into the reality genre and became the definition of water cooler television, drawing comparisons to the first season of Big brother. And as for the ending, well, let’s just say it’s not for the faint of heart.
But the British version was not the first. Originally a Dutch TV show, it was made into versions all over the world, including Australia, France, Belgium and Russia. Here’s how to watch the UK and Australian shows, plus the all-new US version.
What is the subject of the Traitors TV show?
The concept is simple. Put a group of strangers together in a remote hotel, anonymously choose three to be the “traitors” while the rest are the “believers”. While the traitors know who the other traitors are, the Believers remain unaware, and must try to get rid of them with nothing but body language and their own suspicions. It is psychological warfare.
Paranoia runs rampant, as the believers never know who they can trust. The same is true for Traitors, as they can attempt to turn the Faithful against one of their fellow Traitors in order to vote them out and expand the Traitor’s remaining share of the prize fund.
Throughout the series, the contestants participate in a series of challenges. These are the kinds of things you might find in a corporate team building exercise, with each challenge giving them the chance to add to the prize money that can be earned. Each show ends with a round table, with all the contestants sitting around and questioning each other, often making baseless accusations as to who the traitor is and their bogus reasons for suspecting them.
Then they vote. The person with the most votes is eliminated. But before they go, they reveal – often with glee – whether they are a traitor or a believer.
Traitors then gather unseen by the Faithful and decide to kill a single contestant – usually anyone they think might be upon them. Hence a large number of contestants are whittled down very quickly, with each of the Faithful being wrongly expelled adding to the sense of tension and paranoia among the remaining Faithful.
