Gleeson plays Colm Doherty, a folk musician living on the fictional Irish island of Inisherin at the end of the Irish Civil War in 1923. When he suddenly begins ignoring his best friend and drinking friend Pádraic Súilleabháin (Farrell) in order to focus on his music Pádraic begins to feel increasingly uncomfortable. Increasingly, he tries more than ever to reach out to his friend.
