Our pick of the best video editing software
Can I download Premiere Pro for free?
You can download Premiere Pro for free with a 7-day free trial.
It’s easy to sign up for this. Just head to the Adobe Premiere Pro website and click Start your free trial. You’ll then be able to get Premiere Pro for free on its own or along with all of your Creative Cloud apps.
However, the free Adobe Premiere Pro download requires you to enter your payment details and agree to a paid subscription, which starts once the trial period ends.
You can cancel your trial during the trial period, but be sure to set yourself a reminder to do so. If you forget to cancel on time, you may end up with a costly subscription.
This is a free download of the full version of Premiere Pro – so, you can test all the features of the program. After the trial period ends, there is no way to download Premiere Pro for free. You’ll need to pay for a Creative Cloud subscription if you want to continue using it.
How do I buy Premiere Pro?
Premiere Pro is not available as a one-time or standalone purchase. The only way to purchase the video editing suite is through a Creative Cloud subscription.
Choose between a Premiere Pro-only subscription or get the tool as part of the Creative Cloud All Apps bundle.
All Apps includes more than 20 creative apps. These include the image editing application Photoshop, the After Effects animation application, and the audio mixing application Audition.
If you are likely to use several of these, then a full Creative Cloud subscription will be the most cost-effective option for you.
How much is Adobe Premiere Pro?
To use Premiere Pro as a standalone app, you’ll be tied down to at least a monthly subscription, but the annual plan is cheaper.
+ The monthly subscription is $31.49 / £30.34
+ Annual subscription price is $20.99 / £19.97 per month
+ Prepaid annual subscription offers a small discount and costs $239.88 / £238.42
Remember – when you sign up for an annual paid monthly subscription, if you want to cancel before the year is up, you’ll have to pay 50% of the remaining subscription fee.
With all Adobe subscriptions, if you cancel within the first 14 days, you can get a full refund.
Prepaying for the annual plan is the most cost-effective option if you will be using Premiere Pro regularly.
But if you’re likely to use it sporadically—you make two or three video projects a year, for example—going for a monthly subscription might be cheaper when you need it.
Creative Cloud All Apps plans use a similar pricing structure if you want to bundle Premiere Pro alongside a host of other creative apps.
+ The monthly subscription is $82.49 / £78.98
+ An annual paid monthly subscription costs $54.99 / £39.95
+ Prepaid annual subscription is $599.88 / £476.98

Adobe Premiere Pro discounts for teachers and students
Adobe is offering students and teachers the option to subscribe to the Creative Cloud All Apps plan at a significantly discounted price
This includes all desktop and mobile apps, plus 100GB of cloud storage, for $19.99 / £16.24 per month. This rises to $29.99 / £25.28 after the first year.
As with other Adobe Creative Cloud plans, you’ll need to be willing to commit all year long. You still have the option to pay for the entire year upfront, but it couldn’t get any cheaper in this case.
You will also need some proof of eligibility to qualify, such as an email address issued by the school.
Discounted business licensing options are also available for businesses.
Premiere Pro: Adobe alternatives and mobile apps
Premiere Pro is Adobe’s flagship video editing application, and is used by many pros, from Hollywood blockbuster editors to YouTube’s most popular content creators.
The desktop-only tool is packed with features for precise nonlinear editing, color correction, audio editing, effects, and more.
For those who want a less complex video editing application — hobbyists who like to edit home videos, for example — Adobe Premiere Elements has it.
In our review of Adobe Premiere Elements, we hailed it as “a powerful video editor with many fun and useful new features to suit the needs of the modern, casual editor.”
If you’re trying to avoid ongoing subscription fees, Premiere Elements might be a good option. Unlike Premiere Pro, the software is available on Windows and Mac for a one-time fee of $99.99 / £86.56.
While you can just download Premiere Pro for free on your desktop, there is a mini mobile app video editor called Premiere Rush (we rated it 4.5 stars in our Adobe Premiere Rush review)
Although it lacks the more complex features of Premiere Pro, Premiere Rush is useful for editing on the go. You can even sync projects to Premiere Pro, so you can come back to them on your computer and enhance them later.
You can download Premiere Rush for free on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. However, this locks some features and they won’t sync with Premiere Pro.
The premium version of Premiere Rush is included with all Premiere Pro subscriptions, or costs $9.99 / £9.98 per month on its own.
Other alternatives to Premiere Pro
Adobe’s video app might be one of the biggest names on the market – but when you can’t download Adobe Premiere Pro for free and keep it forever, there are options out there.
DaVinci Resolve is our top pick for the best free alternative to Premiere Pro, while Corel VideoStudio is an excellent choice if you want to stop subscribing and just paying a one-time fee.
After languishing for months, a series of recent updates has greatly improved Apple’s Final Cut Pro, which continues to grow in popularity with consumers and professional editors.
If you’re not convinced Premiere Pro is the right choice for you, we’ve rounded up the best paid and free options for you Adobe Premiere Pro alternatives.
