We’ll be with you: This weekend isn’t particularly inviting for new stuff to watch on streaming services. While the likes of The Last of Us, Vikings: Valhalla, and The Menu got off to a great start in January, the next few days are going to be less interesting on the entertainment front.
That’s not to say there aren’t any new movies and TV shows streaming, but when That ’90s Show on Netflix and Violent Night on Peacock top our list of recommendations, it’s hard to get excited about a weekend on the couch. A trip to the movies, anyone?
Anyway, we’re still going ahead and have rounded up seven of the biggest additions to Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and more to help you find something — anything! – to enjoy the next few days.
That ’90s Show (Netflix)
Long-running Fox sitcom That ’70s Show is getting a Netflix-based revival this weekend in the form of This ’90s Show.
Unlike the short-lived That ’80s Show, this sequel is set in the same world as the original production – albeit 15 years later – and follows Eric and Donna’s daughter, Leah Foreman (Kale Haverda), as she visits her grandparents (again played by Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp) to spend a summer in Wisconsin.
Newcomers to Point Place include Ashley Aufderheide, Mace Coronel, Maxwell Asi Donovan, and Reign Doe — but the likes of Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, and Mila Kunis will also make guest appearances during the first season of this 10-episode ’90s show. Could this earn a spot on our list of the best Netflix shows? Unlikely, but we won’t rule that out now.
Now available to stream on Netflix.
violent night (peacock)
If you want to see Santa Claus go on a murderous rampage (no, neither do we), look no further than Violent Night on Peacock.
championship Weird thingsDavid Harbour, this delightfully brutal black comedy – which debuted in theaters just before Christmas last year – pits the big man himself against a group of mercenaries who attack an unsuspecting family’s estate on Christmas Eve.
Unsurprisingly, reviews of Violent Night were mixed upon its release, with verdicts ranging from “entertaining heist-shock” to “overly indulgent.” However, if you’re in the mood for some festive antics in *note-checking* January, you’ll likely find plenty to enjoy here. UK viewers can find This One still playing in theaters.

Jung_E (Netflix)
Netflix continues its commitment to big-budget Korean storytelling with the new sci-fi movie Jung_ E.
Set in the post-apocalyptic 22nd century, the film follows a researcher in an artificial intelligence laboratory who leads the effort to end a civil war by cloning the brain of a heroic soldier – her mother. Written and directed by Train to Busan filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, Train stars Kang Soo-yeon (in her final appearance before her death), Kim Hyun-joo, and Ryu Kyung-soo.
Critics have called Jung_E “beautifully touching” and “a heartwarming, emotional surprise,” so the film may well earn a spot on our list. The best Netflix movies in 2023.

Truth Be Told Season 3 (Apple TV Plus)
Full disclosure: we really forgot to say that Apple TV Plus. Not that it doesn’t guarantee recall, but the Octavia Spencer-led series didn’t generate the same buzz as to cut And Ted Lassoboth of which rank at the top of our list of the best Apple TV Plus shows.
Anyway, new episodes of the glossy crime drama will find investigative journalist Spencer – Bobby Parnell – turned true crime whistleblower, leading to a suspected sex trafficking ring that may be responsible for the disappearance of several young girls.

The accused (Fox Now)
Sticking to the theme of the grim crime drama, a new anthology series Defendants begins airing on Fox Now in the US from Sunday.
Adapted from the 2010 BBC production of the same name, this 15-episode film follows various different characters as they await their verdict in court and tell the story behind how they find themselves accused. Michael Chiklis, Margo Martindale, Wendell Pierce, Rachel Bilson, and Abigail Breslin are among the cast of the show.

Game Theory with Bomani Jones Season 2 (HBO Max)
In fact, this week’s documentary selection is pretty lackluster — so we’ve decided to show HBO Max some love by recommending Season 2 of Game Theory With Bomani Jones.
This talk show finds acclaimed journalist Bomani Jones breaking down timely issues in the world of sports through in-depth analysis, interviews with special guests, and his signature commentary style. New episodes will become available to stream every Friday.
